The Painted warrior of Butuan

___________________________________

This is my concept of a Pintado Warrior of Butuan, you probably find the tattoo pattern odd,
the tattoo Pattern is inspired by one the early Spanish account description of a Cebuano Tattoo which Pigafetta describe as Fiery or wavy pattern tattoo
as he mentioned in his journal when Magellan and his crew visited the island of Cebu. mixing it with the generic tattoo design which you can find it
on one of the Bisaya illustration in the 1500s Boxer manuscript and Alcina’s depiction of a Bisaya tattooed warrior which they described as Bold line and Zigzag pattern.

The Chest tattoo is a Sampaguita design tattoo (is not actually a sun tattoo, its actually a flower tattoo which is very similar to the Bornean Tattoo)

The Sword is an Ilonggo blade which is the “Ginunting” the hilt design which mimics a Beast head is inspired by one of the Ginunting images which you can find it on “Filipino History & weapon” facebook page,

This was taken in 2005, with myself (Fisherman hat dude) and my Cousin Paul (Red shirt dude) along side with our soldier friend and Mr. sleeping soldier. My cousin’s father invited us to come in some sort of a military exercise just outside the road to Maria Cristina Falls, Iligan. My Cousin’s father is a reserve Major and also worked in the Maria Cristina Power plant in Mindanao.

We listen and learn on how life of a Philippine soldier is, how minimum their wages are, how they part with their families in order to do their duty as a soldier, one of them told us “a life of soldier is just big adventure.” and also told us stories.

When I was little kid I always dreamed about being a soldier that’s when I shifted dreaming about being a Pirate and a spaceman xD. I remember my aunt asked me why do I want to be a soldier? one thing that always pop in my mind is “protecting our own” I really don’t know where I get that, but I grew up with it.

I’ve been away from home for almost 6 years now, I remember whenever we visit other towns and cities, there are always check points, there always marines posted everywhere, and you always see armored cars and choppers passing by, we sometimes waved at them hoping they wave back, that was actually fun times,

now we hear the news about the Progress in Mindanao, we hope this peace and progress will last forever, no! we want this to last forever.

I really miss home.

I added new Tuning sound marks or (Paghuni sa pantingog kudlit) this are,
– long sound vowel (Taas pantingog),
– a glottal stop (Balî pantingog),
– a “ya sound” (Ya kudlit)
“which change any consonant inherent vowel to “ya” example: Dya, Sya etc.”
– a “ang sound” (ang kudlit)
“which adds any consonant inherent vowel to “ang sound” example: Kang, Dang etc.”

which I based my modern kudlit/mark on the Kawi script diacritical mark,

The design of the symbols are based on Visayan Tattoo and other austronesian elements, which represent both Upperworld (curvature characters) and Underworld (V shape characters) elements according to Austronesian beliefs (reference).
(I’m going to post that soon.)

There are words in Visayan that has the same spelling but different sound and meaning, this is the reason why we need to implement additional tuning marks,
for example the word “Baga” which means “scorching” in Sinugbu language, there are other words that has the same spelling like “Bagâ” which means “Thick”
and “bágá” which means “lungs” both has the same spelling but different sound vowels and meaning.

and by the way I also based my Vowel killer on Kawi script:
(Notice the bird shape pattern, the shape represent the upperworld element (reference).)
